Life Insurance and Annuities

While life insurance is commonly used to provide security for a family, a gift of life insurance can be a very attractive method of charitable giving. This type of gift is powerful because small annual installments by donors will translate into a substantial gift for the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Foundation Inc. in the future. Donating through life insurance allows the donor to maintain wealth for beneficiaries while allowing the estate to benefit from tax relief. There are two ways to donate using life insurance:

1. Transfer ownership of an existing policy to the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Foundation Inc. and also designate it as the policy's beneficiary. In this case the Foundation will issue a charitable receipt for the policy's cash surrender value, plus any accumulated dividends and interest. If, after gifting a policy that is not a paid-up policy, and the donor chooses to keep it in force, any additional premiums paid are treated as gifts to the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Foundation Inc. and receive charitable receipts.
2. Purchase a new policy and designate the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Foundation Inc. as its Owner and Beneficiary. Income tax receipts will be issued for the full amount of the premiums paid.

A gift of life insurance, as with any planned gift, can be designated by the donor for a specific use, or it can be directed into the general fund. It can also be given in the donor's own memory, or in memory of someone they wish to honour.
